Defects in Thin Nematic Shells

Defect structure in thin shells of nematic liquid crystals. The structures were produced by making core-shell double emulsions with microfluidic devices. Depending on the thickness of the shell relative to the drop size, different defect structures are observed, including structures with 4, 3 and 2 defects. This will enable new classes of emulsions to be formed.
