Thermal Analysis Facility

The MRSEC has several instruments dedicated to thermal analysis:

TA Instruments DSC Q200

TA Instruments DSC Q200

The Q200 is a versatile, research-grade Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) with Tzero® technology that offers thermal analysis from ambient to 725 C. The Center offers standard aluminum and specialized platinum sealed pans for sample analysis.

TA Instruments TGA Q5000

TA Instruments TGA Q5000

The Q5000 Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) measures the amount and rate of weight change in a material, either as a function of increasing temperature, or isothermally as a function of time, in a controlled atmosphere. It can be used to characterize any material that exhibits a weight change and to detect phase changes due to decomposition, oxidation, or dehydration. The Q5000 has a temperature range of ambient to 1000 C with mass sensitivity of 0.1μg. The instrument has a sample capacity of 1 g and offers a heating rate of 0.1 to 100 °C/min. The instrument included an auto sampler.

These instruments are operated under faculty supervision with training by postdoctoral fellow and graduate student "super-users." They are also available to researchers from academe and industry. If you would like to find out more about these instruments, please contact us, and provide us with a brief information about your interests.
